South Jones jumps on Brookhaven girls

ELLISVILLE — The South Jones Lady Braves beat Brookhaven’s LadyPanthers 6-1 Tuesday in a Division 6-4A fastpitch softball test.Kay Stewart pitched the win, allowing 4 hits and striking out 11.Stewart didn’t issue a base on balls.

Pitcher Ashley Sykes (12-5) absorbed the setback. She walked 3batters and struck out 2.

A triple by catcher Megan Bateman paced Brookhaven’s offense.Allison Wallace, Taylor Crane and Sykes singled.

The Lady Braves exploded for 4 runs in the third inning as theycapitalized on Brookhaven errors. They are one game behind LawrenceCounty in the division race and host the Lady Cougars Thursday.

“We fell apart in the third inning,” said Brookhaven coach LisaCovington, recalling her team’s 7 errors. “We couldn’t stop makingerrors.”

The Lady Panthers (12-5, 3-4) resume play Thursday, hostingMendenhall for junior varsity and varsity action, starting at 4:30at the Hansel King Sportsplex.

In the JV game, South Jones beat Brookhaven15-2. Brittany Smith was the losing pitcher.

The Lady Panthers got singles from Terri Hodges and BrittanyBateman.
