Velma S. Allen

Services for Velma S. Allen of Brookhaven were 10 a.m., Monday,April 5, at Brookhaven Funeral Home Chapel with burial in RiverwoodMemorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Allen, 85, died April 3, 2004, at her daughter’s residencein Meridian. She was born in Franklin County on May 20, 1918, toJohn R. Smith and Ella Strait Smith.

She was retired from King’s Daughters Medical Center. Mrs. Allenwas a member of First Baptist Church of Brookhaven and the LLClub.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Evie E.Allen; a son, Frank Whitehead Jr.; several brothers and sisters;and two grandchildren.

Survivors are her daughters, Jo Ann Wagner of Meridian, andLouise Stafford of Baker, La.; a son, Claude Whitehead of Glendale,Ariz.; her sister, Ella M. Dunnigan of Natchez; her brothers,Donald Smith, Roy Smith and Earl Smith, all of Natchez; ninegrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and fourgreat-great-grandchildren.

Walter “Shorty” Higdon

Services for Walter “Shorty” Higdon of Brandon, formerly ofHazlehurst, are 2 p.m., Monday, April 5, at Stringer Family FuneralServices Chapel with burial in Hillcrest Church of ChristCemetery.

Mr. Higdon, 90, died April 3, 2004, at Mississippi BaptistMedical Center.

He was a retired truck driver. He was a resident of CopiahCounty until 2002 when he and his wife moved to Brandon to becloser to their daughters. Mr. Higdon was a member of HillcrestChurch of Christ.

Preceding him in death was his brother, Willie L. Higdon.

Survivors are his wife, Ayleen Smith Higdon; his daughters,Janice Cook of Flowood, and Patsy Simonson of Brandon; his sisters,Lora Mae Forrester of Belzoni, Nellie Walker of Ridgeland, MonteilWalker of Clinton, and Charlyne Warren of Clairmont, Calif.; hisbrother, Bob Higdon of Madison; and two grandchildren.

Bernice Mildred Jordan

Services for Bernice Mildred Jordan of Bogue Chitto are 11 a.m.,Tuesday, April 6, at Shady Grove Baptist Church with burial inShady Grove Cemetery.

Visitation is Monday from 4-9 p.m., at Brookhaven FuneralHome.

Mrs. Jordan, 80, died April 3, 2004, at Silver Cross NursingHome. She was born in Lincoln County on Dec. 15, 1923, to WilliamBenjamin Walker and Flora Thames Walker.

She was a homemaker and a member of Shady Grove BaptistChurch.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two sisters; sevenbrothers; and a great-grandchild, Brittany Roberts.

Survivors are her daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and TommyCrum of Brookhaven; her sons and daughters-in-law, Travis JordanJr. and wife Sondra, Star and Sandra Jordan of Bogue Chitto;Kenneth and Betty Jordan of Long Beach; her sister, Bertha Kemph ofBrookhaven; her brother, Earl Walker of McComb; her grandchildren,Jon and wife Mary, Jay, Jessica, Kristi, Ashlee, Stancie, Jack andDrew; and her great-grandchildren, Taylor, Piper, Reagan, Garrett,Savannah, Jordan, Jacob, Abbie and Emily.

Shirley D. Mullins

Services for Shirley D. Mullins of Hazlehurst are 1 p.m.,Monday, April 5, at Stronghope Baptist Church with burial inStronghope Cemetery.

Mrs. Mullins, 67, died April 3, 2004, at Central MississippiMedical Center. She was born in Copiah County on Dec. 14, 1936, toDewitt Rushing and Pauline Bounds.

She was a retired clerk from Fred’s. She was a member of theBaptist faith and of the Eagles Lodge in LaPorte, Texas.

Survivors are her husband, Jimmy Mullins of Hazlehurst; herdaughter, Cindy Cline of Hazlehurst; her sons, Dee Hemphill ofHazlehurst, and Gene Wilson of Gilbert, La.; and her grandchildren,Tony Hemphill of Hazlehurst, Misty Wilson, Michael Wilson and CodyWilson, all of Gilbert, and Michael Gough of Houston, Texas.
