Lawrence Co. trounces Terry

TERRY — The Lawrence County Cougars trounced the Terry Bulldogs17-3 in Division 6-4A high school baseball action Tuesday night.The visiting Cougars exploded for 9 runs in the second, then added5 more in the third, to break open the game.

The lopsided Lawrence County win showed just how zany baseballcan sometimes be. On March 12, at Jimmie Davis Park, Terry hammeredLawrence County 11-0, as Bulldog righty Adam Cook collared theCougars on just 1 hit. Cook took the mound against Lawrence Countyagain on Tuesday, but the result was almost the total opposite.

“It can be a strange game,” said Lawrence County coach ChrisClark. “The first time we played them, they totally dominated us.It was like we didn’t even belong on the field with them.

“Tonight, with almost all of the same players on the field, welooked like the far dominant team. You just never know.”

With the win, Clark’s Cougars improved to 10-12 overall, and 5-5in Division 6-4A. The win moved Lawrence County into a virtual tiewith Terry in the race for third and fourth place in the division.The top 4 teams from each division will advance to the statebaseball playoffs.

In the top of the second, Terry suffered through a miserableinning as Lawrence County erupted for 9 runs. Casey Williams had 2hits in the inning and Marlon Stanfield and Luke Watts also hitsafely. Four Terry errors proved just as crucial.

In the third inning, Trent Hartzog, Jonathan Stephens and JosephEvans had hits for Lawrence County as the Cougars stretched theirlead to 14-0. Klein Harbour’s 2-run homer, a Stephens double, andWatts’ RBI single highlighted the Cougars’ 3-run fifth, ensuring a5-inning, 10-run rule win.

Terry scratched across 2 runs in the third and 1 more in thefifth, against LCHS starter Klein Harbour. Harbour went the full 5innings, allowing 3 hits, walking 2, and striking out 5.

In junior varsity action, LCHS edged Terry 3-2in a 4-inning game. Taebyus Smith was the winner in relief ofMackenzie Woods. Smith and Reese Daniels had Lawrence County’s onlyhits.

Cougar catcher Zachary Summers threw out 4 of 5 would-be Terrybase stealers.

Lawrence County will travel to Columbia for games against bothColumbia and North Forrest on Saturday afternoon. Coach JerryGibson’s Bulldogs will host South Pike in an important divisiongame on Thursday.
