Panthers knock down Natchez, Jefferson Co.

As the high school baseball regular season winds down, a lot ofteams are looking for depth in all phases of the game. A reliefpitcher or a pinch hitter could be the difference between advancingto the next round of the playoffs or going home.

Brookhaven got some valuable experience Saturday afternoon asthe Panthers hosted Natchez and Jefferson County at Moyer Field fora tripleheader. In the opener, Ole Brook smashed the NatchezBulldogs 12-2 in 5 innings. In Game 2, the Bulldogs defeated theJefferson County Tigers 18-6 in 4 innings. In 3 innings, thePanthers shut out the Tigers 19-0.

Brookhaven travels to North Pike Tuesday. The JV game begins at5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 7.

Brookhaven 12, Natchez 2

The Panthers (16-4), behind the pitching of starter Brooks Halland Xavier Qualls, limited Natchez to only 2 hits. Hall went 3innings, allowing a home run, with 8 strikeouts. Qualls tossed thefinal 2 innings, allowing a double, a walk and 3 strikeouts.

Qualls led the Panther offense with 3 runs scored. GrantMcDonnieal singled twice. Hall, W. T. King and Adam Ogden eachscored twice for head coach Randy Spring.

The Bulldogs (5-15), coached by Charlie Williams, got a homerfrom Matthew Henderson. Kendall Logan doubled. Natchez pitchers hit7 Ole Brook batters and committed 4 errors in a sloppyperformance.

“We took advantage of their mistakes,” said Spring. “Brooks andXavier gave us a good effort on the mound today.”

Jason Hayes suffered the loss for the Bulldogs while JosephHayes came on in relief.

Natchez 18, Jefferson Co. 6

The Bulldogs (6-15) jumped on the Tigers early, scoring 7 runsin the first 2 innings. Cameron Logan picked up the win for Natchezas Henderson got the save. Joseph Hayes singled, double, tripled,scored 3 runs and had 3 RBI.

Jefferson Co. (0-10), coached by John Hollowell, got a doubleand a run scored by Ivan Mays. Kevin Berry suffered the loss forthe Tigers.

Brookhaven 19, Jefferson Co. 0

Ole Brook (17-4) needed only 2 innings to post their 19 runs.The Panthers sent 20 batters to the plate in the second innings,scoring 14 runs.

Brandt Hinton led the charge, going 4-for-4 with a pair ofsingles, a double, a triple, 3 runs scored and 4 RBI. McDonniealhad 3 singles, 4 RBI and 3 runs scored. Smith scored 3 runs.

Freshmen Zach Watson and Josh Coone combined on the no-hitter.Watson garnered the win, while Coone got the save. Watson and Cooneeach struck out 3 Tiger batters.

“Everyone got to play today,” said Spring. “We got to work somedifferent players on the mound and the field.”

Jefferson County’s Robert Shelvy took the loss, with a reliefappearance by Dorian Gray in the third.

“We are very young,” said Hollowell whose team dropped to 0-11.”We only have three seniors, two juniors and the rest are seventhand eighth graders.

“This is the first time in 22 years that Jefferson County hasfielded a baseball team,” added Hollowell.
