SUMMIT — The Co-Lin Wolves needed one win Saturday in theirSouth Division baseball doubleheader with the Southwest CommnityCollege Bears to land a berth in next week’s MACJC StateTournament.

The Wolves took no prisoners and handed the Bears 7-3 and 6-3losses to secure a spot in the tournament. The tourney will be heldat Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, beginning Thursdayand continuing through Saturday.

Co-Lin improves to 28-14 on the season and 11-5 in divisionplay. Southwest falls to 12-25 overall l and 1-15 in the South.

“This was big,” said Co-Lin head baseball coach Keith Case. “Wehad to win one to get into state. And we won both.”

Co-Lin faces Meridian at 1 p.m. in the opening round of state.Itawamba meets Hinds at 4 and Pearl River entertains MississippiDelta at 7. The tourney is played under double-eliminationrules.

Co-Lin 7, Southwest 3

Going the distance for the win was sophomore Cole Zumbro (5-2)with 6 strikeouts, 3 walks and 3 runs allowed on 8 hits.

The losing pitcher was Williams Lindley (4-2) with 6 strikeouts,1 walk and 7 runs allowed on 9 hits.

“Cole pitched a good ball game,” said Case. “We put all the hitstogether. We got some things to happen. It feels good to go out andtake care of it yourself.”

Southwest took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but Co-Linexploded for 6 runs in the top of the third for the 6-1 lead.

Powering the Wolves with a triple and a double was freshmanPatrick Williams. Keeyon Sanders singled twice. Doubling was JodyBritt. Diego Nucete, Jeffrey Waycaster, Cole Zumbro and AaronGuillot singled.

Jarrett England paced Southwest with a double and a single.Dooley Simmons doubled. Hitting safely were Will Evans, Birdsong,Cody White, Josh Beavers and Jonathan Heroman.

Co-Lin 6, Southwest 3

The Bears tied the game at 3-all in the bottom of the seventhinning to force nine innings. The Wolves came back with three runsin the top of the ninth for the 6-3 lead and eventual win.

In the top of the ninth, Guillot, Casey Ginn and Justin Sykessingled. Guillot scored off Syke’s single for the 4- 3 lead. Ginnstole third base and scored on a Williams sacrifice fly to go ahead5-3. Sykes scored on a throwing error by Southwest for the 6-3win.

The Wolves had led 2-0 after two innings. The Bears scored onerun in the third and fourth innings to tie the game at 2-2. Co-Linjumped ahead 3-2 in the fifth. Williams doubled and Britt singled.Nucete hit a sacrifice fly to score Williams.

In the seventh, Southwest’s Cody White doubled and JonathanHeroman singled to drive in White for the tying run.

Winning pitcher Matthew Fox (5-0) worked the final three inningsfor the Wolves, ending the ninth with a fly out and two groundouts. Colby Beach started and went six innings with three runsallowed on eight hits, five strikeouts and two walks.

John Birdsong (0-1) took the loss for the Bears.

Guillot singled three times for the Wolves. Zumbro singled.

“We played hard,” said Case. “We did what we had to do. We putour hits together when we needed to.”

Beavers led the Bears with a home run. Birdsong doubled. Englandand Heroman singled twice. Roy Ott hit two singles.

Co-Lin wraps up regular season play Sunday at Delgado in NewOrleans, La., for a doubleheader. The first game begins at 1p.m.
