Phil Webb, first year head baseball coach at Pontotoc, says hedoesn’t have any superstars on his squad. The Warriors, led byeight seniors, have still managed to win the Class 4A North StateChampionship Series and forge a 32-4 record.

“We have a bunch of guys who play hard and believe inthemselves,” said Webb, a Moorevile product.

The Warriors eliminated Ridgeland Monday night, winning 2-1 in agame played at Hinds Community College in Raymond. It was the thirdgame of the best-of-three series.

Pontotoc is led by right-handed pitcher/infielder Caleb Kidd whobats .418 and is 11-1 on the mound. Kidd has signed a scholarshipwith Itawamba Community College.

Josh Robinson, (11-2), a junior right-hander, has the secondbest pitching record on the Pontotoc squad.

Hays Gregory, a senior catcher, has a .402 batting average andleads the team with 13 homers.

Webb said he didn’t know much about the Brookhaven squad. “Theymust be pretty good to win South State.”

The Panthers (28-7) beat West Jones 3-1 Monday night on MoyerField to secure the South State Championship. They host Pontotoctonight at 6 p.m. on Moyer Field.

Game Two will be played Saturday at 3 p.m. at The Hollow,Pontotoc’s home field. Outfield dimensions are 310 feet down thefoul lines, 335 in the gaps and 350 in dead center.

If a third game is required to determine the state championship,it will be played next Thursday at Smith-Wills Stadium inJackson.

This is the first year for Pontotoc to be in Class 4A. TheWarriors had been a dominant force in Class 3A for over 20 years.Pontotoc won the Class 3A state titles in 1980, ’85 and ’86. TheWarriors have been state runners-up four times.
