Sykes wins long drive contest

CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. — Co-Lin’s Dale Sykes won the long drivecontest Tuesday at the NJCAA Division III Golf National Tournament.He drove his Pinnacle ball 298 yards, using a Titleist driver.

At the par-72 Chautauqua Golf Club, Sykes fired an 80 on a rainyWednesday, giving him a 2-day total of 158. He was seven shots backafter the first round when he posted a 6-over 78.

Brendan O’Connell of Georgia Military fired a 3-under 69Wednesday to claim a 4-stroke lead. His 2-day total is 141.

In second place was Todd Crepiel of SUNY who shot 74-71–145.Three players are tied for third at 147.

Craig Smith of Brookhaven and Co-Lin shot an 86 in Tuesday’sopening round. He shot 81 yesterday, giving him a 167.

“The greens are bent grass and that’s new to a lot of us. Theyare fast and there’s a lot of grain to them,” said Co-Lin golfcoach Justin Smith. “The rough is tough, too.”
