John Bennett

Services for John Bennett of Erie, Penn., formerly of Sontag,are 1 p.m., Monday, June 28, at Mount Pleasant M.B. Church inLawrence County with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation is Sunday from noon until 5 p.m., at Tyler FuneralHome, with the family present from 4-6 p.m.

Mr. Bennett, 102, died June 21, 2004, at his residence. He wasborn in Oklahoma on March 2, 1902, to John and Lula Bishop.

He was a co-owner of Bennett’s Car Wash and retired employee ofHammermill Paper Co. and General Electric Co. He was a member ofFriendship Baptist Church in Erie and Mount Pleasant Baptist Churchin Sontag. He was a baseball fan and enjoyed playing theharmonica.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Lily andNellie; and three brothers, Clarence Bennett, Ivory Bennett andRobert “R.J.” Bennett.

Survivors are his daughters, Helen Brown of Sontag, MarieLockett of Rochester, N.Y., Elouise McKinney of Long Beach, Calif.,and Johnnie Butts, Shirley Johnson and Colleen Brown, all of Erie;26 grandchildren; 88 great-grandchildren; 12great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews andcousins.

Willie Black Sr.

Services for Willie Black Sr. of Brookhaven are 2 p.m., Sunday,June 27, at Mt. Olive M.B. Church with burial in the churchcemetery.

Visitation is Saturday from 3-8 p.m., at Williams Mortuary, withthe family present from 7-8 p.m.

Mr. Black, 88, died June 23, 2004, at King’s Daughters MedicalCenter in Brookhaven. He was born in Lincoln County on Oct. 13,1915, to Willard Black and Aldena Smith Black.

He was a retired employee of Phillips Brothers Lumber Company.He also worked at the brick yard. He was a member of St. James M.B.Church.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Mittie Roberson Black; onedaughter, Clarice Maxwell; one son, Dennis Black; one sister,Lucille Cooper; and his brothers, Marvin Black and EuliceBlack.

Survivors are two daughters, Laverne Butler of Wesson and MarieSanders of Bogue Chitto; six sons, Willie Black Jr. and JamesBlack, both of Brookhaven, Lester Black of Pearl, and O.L. “Nick”Black, Theodore “Bo” Black and Willie B. Black, all of BogueChitto; one sister, Costella Williams of Brookhaven; 26grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Emma Jean Ratcliff Moore

Services for Emma Jean Ratcliff Moore of Brookhaven are 11 a.m.,Saturday, June 26, at Bogue Chitto Church of Christ with burial inStewart Cemetery.

Visitation is Friday from 4-9 p.m., at Brookhaven Funeral Home,and Saturday from 10-11 a.m., at the church.

Mrs. Moore, 65, died June 24, 2004, at University Hospital inJackson. She was born in Lincoln County on Oct. 7, 1938, toLattiemore Ratcliff and Gladys Murray Ratcliff.

She was a retired Certified Nurses Aide and sitter. She wasBaptist.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Tommy G.Moore; and one son, Alvin Chandler Jr.

Survivors are her daughters, Betty Thompson and her husband,Allen, of Avon, Ala., Margert Smith and her husband, Daron, ofBrookhaven, and Joan Holifield and her husband, Thomas, ofBrookhaven; four sons, Martin Moore and his wife, Claudette, ofBrookhaven, Tommy R. Moore and his wife, Angela, of McComb, MikeMoore and his wife, Kay, of Brookhaven, and Billy Moore ofBrookhaven; her sister, Dorothy Johnson of Dothan, Ala.; herbrother, Larry Ratcliff of Baton Rouge, La.; and her grandchildren,Clayton Roland, Johnny Claibourn, M.J. Moore, Matthew Moore, ZachMoore, Kaitlyn Smith, Ryan Smith and Mason Moore.

Andrew “Jack” Smith

Services for Andrew “Jack” Smith of Brookhaven are 2 p.m.,Monday, June 28, at Brookhaven Living Word Christian Center withburial in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Visitation is Sunday from noon until 7 p.m., at WilliamsMortuary, with the family present from 6-7 p.m.

Mr. Smith, 55, died June 21, 2004, at Hospice Ministries inRidgeland. He was born in Brookhaven on Dec. 14, 1948, to Anderson”Bubba” Smith and Earlene “Sue” Smith.

He was a graduate of Alexander High School, Class of 1966. Hewas a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Preceding him in death was his father.

Survivors are his mother; his wife, Paulette Smith ofBrookhaven; his daughters, LaShun Smith of Jackson and LaToya Smithand Andrea Smith, both of Brookhaven; his son, Kevin Smith ofHattiesburg; his sisters, Mae Frances Smith of Brookhaven, AliceMarie Echols of Flint, Mich., Beverly Ann Stanton of Panama City,Fla., and Sherry Course of Brookhaven; and three grandchildren.
