Summit captures 13s crown

Summit’s all-stars secured the Dixie Boys 13s District FourTournament championship Monday night at Exchange Club Park’s LegionField. They rode the 5-hit pitching of Eric Boyd to a 9-5 victoryover the Brookhaven all-stars.

Summit advances to the state tournament at Laurel.

Brookhaven had rebounded from an 11-5 Friday night loss toSummit and eliminated Natchez 17-2 Saturday night.

Summit 9, Brookhaven 5

Boyd, who hit a grand slam homer in Summit’s comeback win overBrookhaven last Friday, sparkled on the mound last night. He struckout 8 batters and walked 5.

Southpaw Justin Ashley fanned 9 and walked 6 in a losingcause.

Three hits by Boyd led Summit’s attack. Alex Price had 2 his andNick Holmes singled.

Brookhaven got 2 hits from Will Gatlin, Caleb Williams andAshley. Micah Bivens and Nick Helmstetter singled as Brookhavenrallied for 5 runs in the fifth.

Brookhaven 17, Natchez 2

Ashley hurled Brookhaven’s win over Natchez, striking out 8batters and walking 3. Losing pitcher Preston Edwards fanned 1 andwalked 4.

At the plate, doubles by Ashley and Sid Cawthorn directed thevictory. Brett Rushing singled twice as Brookhaven claimed a9-2.

Natchez got a double from Daniel Jenkins and a single fromEdwards.
