WESSON — After a Saturday scrimmage and a Sunday afternoonPicture Day in Stone Stadium, the Copiah-Lincoln Community Collegefootball team continues the learning process. School starts todayand the Wolfpack will become more acquainted with the academic sideof life at Co-Lin.

“We had a decent scrimmage,” said Glenn Davis, Co-Lin’sfirst-year head coach. “We have to keep making stridesforward.”

The Wolves have two freshman quarterbacks learning the offense.They are Beau Belleck of Wesson and Victor Williams of Clewiston,Fla. Belleck played high school football in Indiana. His familyrecently moved to Wesson.

“Our quarterbacks are beginning to catch on,” said Co-Linassistant Shelton Gandy who is in charge of quarterbacks andrunning backs. “You have to get them ready to compete on Sept. 2,”when the Wolfpack kicks off its season at Holmes Community Collegein Goodman. “There is no redshirt year like at a 4-yearschool.”

Gandy said sophomore Julius Roberson of Mendenhall ran the ballwell in the scrimmage. He has been moved from defensive back totailback.

“Julius has come along real well,” said Gandy. Charles McRae ofClewiston, Fla. and Emmanuel Sinclair of Wesson also are working attailback.

Fullback A.J. Holloway has been sidelined by shoulder surgerybut should be ready for the second game of the season. Wessonsophomore Russell Robinson has been moved from linebacker tofullback.

Receivers coach Rob Channell said his group had shown muchimprovement since spring practice. “For the first scrimmage, theylooked pretty good.”

Davis is coaching the offensive line where a number of freshmenare being counted on to fill positions. Luke Thames of Monticellois working at center. James Redmond, a transfer from MississippiState, has looked impressive during practice.

“Our line should be bigger and a lot better,” said Davis. “Inthe past, a lot of Co-Lin’s troubles have been up front in theline.”

On defense, new defensive coordinator Brett Shufelt said hisunit needed to make wholesale improvements before the first game.”We still have a lot of work to do.”

Shufelt said cornerbacks Marcus Corley of Wesson and MichaelBlackwell of Bogue Chitto performed well in the scrimmage. Noseguard Michael Davis of Fayette also drew praise for hisperformance.

The kicking game is relying mainly on freshman Chris Blackwellof Meadville. Freshman kicker Nic Gunter of Wesson was seriouslyinjured in an auto accident while on vacation in Myrtle Beach, S.C.three weeks ago. Gunter suffered a broken arm plus torn ACL and MCLin his right knee. He kicks left-footed.
