Fourth quarter lifts BA over Buccaneers

FRANKLINTON, La. — Credit the Brookhaven Academy Cougar defensefor securing Friday night’s 12-7 comeback win over the BowlingGreen Buccaneers in District 4-AA action.

Bowling Green got a first down on the BA four-yard line late inthe game. The unbeaten Cougars kept the Bucs out of the end zoneand took over with 23 seconds remaining to run out the clock forBA’s third straight win of the 2004 season.

“It was a spectator’s game,” said BA head football coach RayIshee. “It was exciting. It ages the coaches about five years.”

Bowling Green quarterback Nick Goings put the Bucs on thescoreboard in the first quarter following a two-yard run. ChadChampaign kicked the PAT and Bowling Green led 7-0.

In the fourth quarter, the Cougars exploded for two bigtouchdown plays for 12 points and the win.

BA sophomore quarterback Price Sessums connected to senior wideout Stewart Sessums for a 63-yard touchdown. The Cougars missed theextra point kick and trailed the Bucs 7-6.

Price Sessums followed up with a 30-yard touchdown run to takethe lead at 12-7. BA’s two-point conversion try failed.

“We played against a good football team,” stated Ishee. “We hadgood individual effort. We still need to work on playing as a unit.Our effort was good. I was pleased with the win.

” They (Bowling Green) are a good football team,” Ishee added.”They had some kids back they didn’t have earlier.”

Directing the Cougar offense was Price Sessums who completed 7of 19 passes for 156 yards and one touchdown. Stewart Sessumscaught four passes for 94 yards. Making two catches for 47 yardswas Paul Davis. Cole Hodges had one catch for 15 yards.

On the ground, Hodges paced Brookhaven with 12 rushes for 58yards. Price Sessums carried eight times for 32 yards and DustyBratton picked up 23 yards on seven carries.

Bowling Green was led by Goings who rushed the football 19 timesfor 23 yards. Augie King finished with 32 yards on eight carries.Goings completed 2 of 10 passes for 61 yards.

Defensively, BA was led by junior Paul Davis with 11tackles and a fumble recovery. Making nine stops each were CameronAchord and Chris Falvey. Steven Covington made eight tackles. ChadCaldwell recovered a fumble.

“We want to improve as a football team,” added Ishee.”We came out healthy. It was a very physical game.”

BA returns home Friday night to entertain Amite SchoolCenter. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
