The Ole Brook Panthers draw their first Region 6-4A test of theseason Friday night, visiting the Wingfield Falcons. Kickoff is 7p.m. at Forest Hill High School’s stadium in south Jackson.

Wingfield (0-3) is looking for its first win of the season. TheFalcons, coached by Chuck Foley, opened their 2004 campaign with a12-6 loss to Forest Hill. They fell 34-0 to Provine the next weekand lost 26-6 to Bailey last Friday.

Brookhaven (2-1) rebounded from an overtime loss at Vicksburg tobeat Clinton’s Arrows 21-18 on the road last week. The Panthers gotan outstanding performance from senior quarterback Jimmy Johns whoamassed 396 yards total offense.

Johns completed 16 of 20 passes for 249 yards and 1 touchdown.He rushed the football 24 times for 127 yards and 1 TD, earning himThe DAILY LEADER’s Offensive Player of the Week award.

Brookhaven coach Tucker Peavey still saw room for improvement,especially inside the 20-yard line. “We need to translate all ofthose offensive yards into touchdowns. We shot ourselves in thefoot a couple times,” against Clinton.

Peavey said Wingfield can’t be overlooked, despite the Falcons’winless record. “We must be ready to play hard for the game to golike we want it to.

The Falcons are coached by Chuck Foley. Peavey said, “They are abetter team than they were a year ago. Their kids play a littleharder.”

Asked about Wingfield’s offense, Peavey said, “They run a Wing-Tconcept. Their quarterback (Antonio Myers) is a good player. Theyhave some defensive linemen and linebackers who show up a lot onthe tape (game film).”

Senior running back Marcus Thames (5-11, 190) is Wingfield’s toprusher.

Ole Brook got an improved effort on defense against Clinton. ThePanthers limited Clinton to 66 rushing yards and 160 passing.

Defensive lineman Jessie Bowman led the Panthers with 6 solotackles, 2 assists and a quarterback sack. Darius Perkins andMarlon Dixon both had 4 tackles and 2 assists. Eric Edwards had 6tackles.

Offensively, senior wide receiver Bud Chatman caught 9 passesfor 159 yards, including a 65-yard TD reception. Junior widereceiver Brandt Hinton had 5 catches for 66 yards.

Senior running back Ronny McNulty rushed the football 14 timesfor 88 yards He had a 42-yard scoring dash in the fourthquarter.

Peavey said the Panthers must improve in all aspects of theirkicking game. Concentration is a key. “Everybody has got to takeeach play as, ‘”I’m the difference on this play.'”

Panther Paws: Brookhaven whipped Wingfield 50-7last year on King Field as Johns passed for 185 yards and 3touchdowns, including TD tosses of 40 and 55 yards to John WayneHavard. McNulty rushed for 108 yards and a TD.
