Enterprise ends 4-game skid

Returning to their early season form, the Enterprise YellowJackets burst out of their four-game losing streak in a big wayFriday night with a 30-14 victory over the visiting St. AloysiusFlashes on Harry L. Cole Field.

The win boosted the Jackets to 3-5 on the season (2-4 in Region4-1A). St. Al limped back to Vicksburg with a 1-7 record and 1-5mark in Region 4-1A.

“We needed that one,” said Enterprise head coach Mac Bezet. “Itstarted in practice this week. We had a good week. We played wellon both sides of the ball.”

Enterprise held the ball for all but four plays in the firstquarter to take a 12-0 lead. Their opening possession led to a12-play, 64-yard drive capped by a one-yard, Blake McKee touchdownrun at the 5:08 mark of the quarter. The two-point conversionattempt failed.

After St. Al failed the recover the ensuing kickoff, the Jacketstook possession at the Flashes’ 40-yard line. Rodney Barker madethe recovery and the Jackets went the distance to expand theirlead. McKee did the honors again with a 20-yard run with 1:35 toplay. The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

The Jackets closed out the first-half scoring with 2:01 to playin the second quarter. Terrell May electrified the home crowd withan 80-yard touchdown run to give Enterprise a 18-0 halftimeadvantage.

St. Al picked up its first points of the night on its initialpossession of the second half. Starting on their own 35-yard line,the Flashes marched the distance on an 11-play drive, ending with afour-yard run by Rob Jones with 7:10 to play in the third quarter.Jonathon Longmire’s PAT attempt was no good leaving the score at18-6.

Enterprise answered quickly with a touchdown of its own. A33-yard McKee kickoff return put the Jackets in business at the St.Al 49-yard line. The Jackets put together a nine-play drive,culminating in a three-yard scoring run by Alex Powell with 2:16left in the period. An unsuccessful two-point conversion attemptleft the score at 24-6.

St. Al picked up its final points of the night at the 10:49 markof the final quarter. A one-yard touchdown dive by Jones ended an11-play, 70-yard drive. Daniel Halinski ran for the two-pointconversion making the score 24-14.

The Jackets scored the final points of the night with 4:55 toplay in the game. Junior tackle Vincent Smith, listed in theprogram at 350 pounds, brought the crowd to its feet with a 17-yardinterception return for a touchdown. Wayne Nations’ PAT attempt waswide.

“We made enough mistakes for two or three games,” said St. Alhead coach Jim Taylor. “We just let it get out of hand in the firstquarter by not tackling and letting them (Jackets) make bigplays.”

Jones led the St. Al running game with 157 yards and twotouchdowns on 27 carries. Alex Halinski followed with 53 yards on10 carries.

Daniel Halinski completed six of 15 passes for 36 yards. He wasintercepted once. Harris Martin had three catches for 21 yards andJones two for 15 yards. Longmire punted once for 26 yards.

The Flashes picked up 21 first downs on the night and werepenalized 2 times for 30 yards.

May topped the Enterprise ground game with 157 yards and atouchdown on 24 carries. McKee had 39 yards and two touchdowns onsix carries before leaving the game with a leg injury.

Cory Everett was good on four of six passes in the game for 51yards. He had one pass picked off. Trey Herrington had two catchesfor 25 yards with Powell and May both having one reception.

Defensively, Chris Moak led Enterprise with 121/2 tackles, including a quarterback sack. Colby Sullivan had sixand a half tackles, with Powell picking up six. Aaron Close and JoeMalone both had a sack. Smith and Herrington both interceped apass.

Enterprise remains at home this week as the Jackets host theundefeated Mize Bulldogs. St. Al returns home to entertain theDexter Bulldogs.
