A graveside service for Judge Michael Lemuel Carr of Brookhavenis 10 a.m. for family only, with a memorial service at 11 a.m.Monday, Oct. 18 at Faith Presbyterian Church of Brookhaven.

Visitation is Sunday from 4-7 p.m., at Brookhaven FuneralHome.

Judge Carr, 83, died Oct. 15, 2004, at his residence. He wasborn in Clinton, N.C., on Dec. 5, 1920.

He was a veteran of World War II, with three and a half years ofoverseas combat with the 63rd and 36th Infantry Divisions. He wasawarded two bronze stars for his combat action. Judge Carrgraduated from the University of North Carolina in 1949, where herecieved his Bachelor of Law degree. He was appointed law clerk tothe Honorable Edwin R. Holmes, United States Circuit Court Judgefor the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, from 1949 through 1951.Judge Carr was a member of the Bar Associations of Copiah, Lincolnand Lawrence Counties and also a member of the Mississippi StateBar Association, the North Carolina State Bar Association and theAmerican Bar Association. He served on the Executive Committee ofthe Junior Bar Section of the Mississippi State Bar Association aswell as the Mississippi Children’s Code Commission. Judge Carrbegan practicing law in Brookhaven, Miss., in 1951, where heresided ever since. He was elected District Attorney of theFourteenth Judicial District in 1955 and served until electedChancellor for the Fifteenth Chancery Court District ofMississippi. Judge Carr served faithfully as Chancellor until hisretirement in 1990, when he assumed Senior Judge status for theState of Mississippi. A committed member of his community, JudgeCarr served his church and town in many ways. He was a longstandingelder of the First Presbyterian Church and teacher of the Men’sBible Class. He served as President of the Presbyterian Men of theState of Mississippi, Chapter Chairman of the American Red Cross,President of the Brookhaven Kiwanis Club, and Chairman of the Boardof Trustees of Belhaven College for many years.

Survivors are his wife of 56 years, Mary Helen Carr; hisdaughters and sons-in-law, Julie Carr and Billy Chadwick of Oxford,Helen Carr and Alex Rondos of Athens, Greece; his grandchildren andtheir spouses, Michael and Kathy Waltman of Madison, Mary Helen andClint Strong of Byram, Susanna Waltman of Athens, Greece, WilliamLyon, and Michael Carr Chadwick, both of Oxford; and hisgreat-granddaughter, Marian Waltman of Madison. Memorials may bemade to the World Missions Project of the Faith Presbyterian Churchof Brookhaven, or to Belhaven College.
