Cyclist clings to life following hit-and-run

Mississippi Highway Patrol troopers are seeking the public’shelp in locating a car used in a Monday afternoon hit-and-runaccident on Highway 51 that left a cyclist clinging to life.

Andreas Kaufman, 38, a visitor from Germany, was listed incritical condition at the University of Mississippi Medical Centerin Jackson this morning, said Staff Sgt. Rod Crawford, publicaffairs officer for the MHP. He has not regained consciousnesssince the accident.

“He sustained life-threatening injuries in the hit-and-runcrash,” he said.

Kaufman was traveling south on Highway 51 south ofCopiah-Lincoln Community College around 1:15 p.m. Monday when hewas struck from behind by a dark-colored Nissan car driven by awhite male, Crawford said.

The Nissan fled the scene, Crawford said, citing witnessreports, but sustained damage to the front passenger side,headlight and turn signal.

“Anyone with information on the driver or the vehicle isencouraged to contact our office,” Crawford said, adding that thesource of the information would be kept confidential.
