Renee Turner of Bogue Chitto doesn’t remember her young sonsaving her life, but she knows he did.
It was a quiet Wednesday night, Oct. 18, when the singlemother’s young sons, Greg, 9, and Damion, 7, crawled into bed withher. It was fortunate for her they did.
Around 1:30 a.m., Renee said, she came partially awake and thenpassed out.
“Greg told me I started squirming in the bed and then I fell outof bed,” she said. “He called to me several times, and I keptpassing out.”
Greg didn’t panic. Renee had been diagnosed as a diabetic aboutseven and a half years ago, and Greg knew of his mother’s medicalcondition. He had been told several times how to respond in anemergency, but he had never been tested.
“When I first started passing out, the doctor recommended I tellthem about (emergency procedures),” Renee said. “But I had neverbeen alone with them before when I passed out.”
Had she been aware of what was happening, she probably wouldhave been concerned, Renee said. There was no need.
Greg found the glucagon emergency kit and administered a shot tohis mother.
“I was scared, but I knew I had to do it,” he said.
He ran to the phone and dialed 911 after giving the shot.
“The phone was shaking in my mind,” Greg said. “I couldn’t stopshaking. I told them she fell out.”
While waiting for the ambulance, Greg brought his now partiallyconscious mother a soda, while Damion brought her handfuls ofcandy.
Medical technicians checked her blood sugar level when theyfirst arrived and found her level to be 38, which is considereddangerously low, Renee said. They placed her on an IV until shereached a safe level.
“I’m very proud of them,” Renee said of her sons. “If I wasthere by myself, or if they had forgotten what to do, there is notelling what could have happened.”
Despite the occasional reminder that he be prepared for thepossibility of his mother suffering an attack, Renee said, she wasmildly surprised he was able to remain calm and handle thesituation.
“He kind of surprised me. Greg’s the quiet one. He’s reallyshown me that he’s growing up,” she said, sharing a hug with hereldest.
