Loyd Star Hornets edge BHS in OT

Loyd Star and Brookhaven compared youth movements Monday nightin Sinclair Gymnasium. Producing an upset, Coach Gene “Moochie”Britt’s Loyd Star Hornets knocked off Brookhaven 66-60 in overtimeas guards Tyler Williford and Drew Case scored 17 and 16 pointsrespectively.

In the 4-minute overtime, Williford provided most of theheroics, sinking 3 free throws and a driving layup. Teammate BrentFells gave the Hornets a 57-55 lead at the start of overtime. Case,a freshman, was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity line for theClass 2A Hornets (2-1).

“We played very well for a young team,” said Coach Britt. “Ourbench did a good job when Tyler, Kordae (Otis) and Brent had threefouls before halftime. I had three ninth graders in there duringthe tough going.”

Brookhaven (0-2), minus its projected post players, Bud Chatmanand Michael Thrasher, because of the Class 4A state footballplayoffs, was in serious trouble when 6-foot center Wade Stewartfouled out with 2:26 left in the game and his team trailing by 4points, 53-49.

BHS head coach Ronald Hines called a timeout to settle his team.The Panthers regrouped and still managed to gain a 55-55 deadlockat the end of regulation. Tory Richardson and Christopher Danielssacked field goals. Panther guard Mike Byrd sank a jumper from theelbow, gaining a 55-55 knot with 50 seconds left in the game.

Stewart led the Panthers with a game-high 23 points and Byrdchipped in 13.

“When Wade gets in foul trouble, we are in trouble inside,” saidHines. “We are a young team. We only have two guys who played muchlast year.

“Our players are embarrassed by losing to Loyd Star,” Hinespointed out. “We are supposed to be playing at a higher level ofcompetition.”

Hines takes his Panthers to Franklin County in MeadvilleThursday night for a showdown with the Class 3A Bulldogs who alsohave several players absent because of the state football playoffs.Brookhaven lost 67-39 to Class 5A Forest Hill last Saturday in theseason-opening Ole Brook Shootout.

In the JV game, Brookhaven prevailed 45-41 asTory Richardson scored 13 points and Kris Richardson 11. TheHornets got 20 points from Matthew Henderson.
