Co-Lin Wolves, Lady Wolves drop pair at Holmes

GOODMAN — Co-Lin sophomore forward Travalyn Smith pumped in agame-high 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds but it wasn’tenough as the Lady Wolves fell to the Holmes Lady Bulldogs 89-77 inwomen’s basketball action Thursday night.

In the men’s game, freshman guard Joe Holliday fired in 24points for the Wolves who fell to the Bulldogs 91-82.

Poor passing and missed scoring opportunities hurt the LadyWolves (2-2) in the first half.

“In the first half, we missed too many opportunities to scorewhen Holmes was pressing us full-court in their 1-2-1-1,” saidCo-Lin women’s coach Gwyn Young. “We had too many bad passes andour transition on defense was very bad.”

Holmes led Co-Lin 40-35 at the half.

“In the second half, we made a good run and cut their lead to 4points, but careless passes let them get back in for a good lead.With 29 turnovers, you won’t win many games. Hopefully, we canlearn from our mistakes and get better as the year progresses. GiveHolmes a lot of credit. They played hard on defense and went to theboards hard.”

Adding support for the Lady Wolves with 14 points apiece wereLoretta Martin and Gloria Lewis. Dana King nailed 12 points,including 2 three-pointers. Lewis also led with six steals.

For 2-1 Holmes, Angela Bound s led with 15 points. Ashley Howardnetted 14 points followed by Tiffany Hubbard with 13 points.Finishing with 10 points was Tonisha Agee.

The Wolves (1-3) struggled on the defensive end of the boardsThursday night. At halftime, Holmes led Co-Lin 41-29.

“We must drastically improve on the defensive end of the floor,”said Co-Lin men’s coach Dennis Sims. “Our players need to put thatas their number one priority.”

Brandon Caston scored 13 points and had three assists for theWolves. Arvel Keys followed with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Pacing 2-1 Holmes with a game-high 29 points was Terrance Akins.Ron Victory pumped in 19 points followed by Ramon Myers with 13.Victor led off the backboards with five rebounds.

Co-Lin visits Mississippi Delta Monday night for two games. Thewomen begin play at 6 p.m.
