Grandson charged in slaying

A missing woman’s grandson was charged with murder afterauthorities found what they believe is the woman’s body early thismorning on South Washington Street, Lincoln County Sheriff’s WileyCalcote said.

Calcote said Mississippi Crime Lab officials were on the scenethis morning conducting an investigation. They were working topositively identify the body found near the old city dump.

“We’re not 100 percent sure, but we think we know who it is,”Calcote said.

Authorities suspect it is the body of Irene Wilcher Rancifer,who was reported missing Oct. 30.

Through information received through the Brookhaven PoliceDepartment, authorities began questioning Rancifer’s grandson,Antwoine, around midnight.

After extensive questioning, Calcote said the 25-year-old manled authorities to the body around 3 a.m. and confessed to thekilling. He remained in jail today charged with murder.

The sheriff estimated the body had been there about three weeks.He said authorities have not determined how the woman died.

Calcote said a motive had not been determined. He said AntwoineRancifer, of 635 industrial Park Road Apt. 67, had been living withhis grandmother.

Authorities had sought the public’s help in locating the women.The last contact the family had with Irene Rancifer was Oct. 22,Calcote said.

“She would go off and stay gone for a week,” Calcote said of thevictim. “They really didn’t think about it (her missing) until alater time.”
