Johnson’s 31 points power Lady Hornets past Enterprise

Enterprise concentrated on stopping Loyd Star senior guardJordan Britt Friday night. That defensive scheme allowed seniorteammate Shara Johnson extra scoring opportunities and sheresponded with a game-high 31 points, leading the host Lady Hornetsto a 65-56 win over the Lady Yellow Jackets.

Johnson scored 9 of her points in the fourth quarter as LoydStar (4-1) broke open a close game with a 22-10 scoring surge. Shealso had 9 rebounds and 6 steals.

“(Enterprise) played a box-and-one on Jordan so that left Sharaopen,” explained Loyd Star coach Lori Britt. Her daughter stillmanaged 13 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals.

Enterprise (0-1), losing its season opener under new head coachJill Nations, battled Loyd Star through 3 quarters. The Jackets got25 points from point guard Kaylin Burke and 12 from Alisha Masonwho was in early foul trouble.

The fourth quarter was decisive on the backboards. Loyd Staroutrebounded Enterprise 15-5.

“We started rebounding when we had to,” said Coach Britt. “Ourpost people didn’t rebound the first half.”

Back-to-back field goals by Loyd Star post players HaileyRatcliff and Brittany Brown gave the hosts a fast start to open thefourth quarter. Brown’s short jumper tied the game at 48-48.Johnson followed with 3 free throws and Jordan banked in a baselinedrive for a 53-48 lead.

Field goals by Dakota Brooks and Johnson increased the margin to11 points, 59-48, with 3:13 left to play.

Nations said early foul trouble and first-game mistakes hurt herteam’s upset bid. “Our girls played hard and they are going to getbetter.”

The Jackets had led 46-43 starting the fourth quarter. Threefield goals by Mason, a putback by Deanna Albritton and 2 freethrows by Burke fueled the third quarter rally. Mason finished with5 rebounds. Erin Johnson and Jana Brister each had 4 rebounds forEnterprise.

In the JV game, Loyd Star beat Enterprise 44-19as Brittany Brown scored 14 points. Lynsey Everett scored 8 forEnterprise.
