Co-Lin splits twinbill at Delta

MOORHEAD — Co-Lin men’s basketball coach Dennis Sims wasdelighted with his team’s defensive performance Monday nightagainst the Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans. Strongdefense also led to a 60-46 victory for the Wolfpack as guardLedell Eackles tossed in 15 points.
In the women’s game, Delta defeated Co-Lin’s Lady Wolves 69-62as sophomore guard Vancherrika Mitchell tossed in 18 points.
Co-Lin resumes play Thursday at Coahoma Community College inClarksdale. The women’s game tips off at 6 p.m.
The Wolves (2-3) forced Delta into 22 turnoversen route to winning their second game of the season. Eacklescollected 5 steals and Arvel Keys 3.
“We played two halve of solid defense,” said Coach Sims. “It wasgood to see us finally play well on the defensive side of thefloor.”
Co-Lin, leading 26-25 at halftime. increased its lead to 25points with 5 minutes left in the game. “Poor free throw shooting(10-23) and ball-handling enabled Delta to reduce Co-Lin’s marginin the late going,” said Sims.
Freshman forward Lamar Hall of Brookhaven helped Co-Lin’s causewith 8 points and a team-high 7 rebounds. Freshman forward TremaineEnock of Pinola grabbed 6 rebounds and scored 9 points. JoeHolliday dished out 3 assists.
Co-Lin made 22 of 45 field goal attempts, including a 6-for-13showing from behind the 3-point arc.
The Lady Wolves (2-3) played their thirdstraight game without sophomore standout guard Jessica Melton whois sidelined with a foot injury. They got a game-high 22 points and11 rebounds from sophomore forward Travelyn Smith of UnionChurch.
Co-Lin women’s coach Gwyn Young watched his Lady Wolves commit aseries of crucial turnovers down the stretch. In the first half,the Lady Trojans (5-0) used a full-court press to forge an earlylead. Young put his team in a match-up zone defense and brieflyregained the lead but trailed 37-36 at halftime.
“We started the second half with two turnovers and a missedlayup,” said Young. “(Delta) got ahead by eight points but westayed our matchup defense. We had some great opportunities to getthe lead but we turned the ball over.
“We still need to improve our ball-handling,” said Young. “Ourpassing and execution on offense must improve, too, if we expect towin.”
The Lady Wolves made 22 of 48 field goal attempts and were1-of-8 from 3-point range.
Mitchell, a 5-6 sophomore fro Cleveland, was followed bysophomore guard Latisha Brown’s 12 points.
