Student dies in high school accident

MEADVILLE – A Franklin County High School died Friday morningafter being injured Thursday afternoon in a shop door accident atthe school, said Coroner Percy Peeler.

The accident happened when sophomore Nigel Wentworth, 16, wasraising the Vo-Tech Center’s shop door for a delivery truck around2 p.m. Thursday.

“The door fell and pinned him to the concrete slab,” saidPeeler, who did not have an estimate on the door’s weight.

Peeler said the University of Mississippi Medical Center’shelicopter was not able to fly to Franklin County due to theweather. Wentworth was transferred to Jackson by a Franklin CountyHospital ambulance.

Wentworth underwent surgery, but there were complications frominternal injuries he sustained in the accident. Wentworth waspronounced dead at 8:18 a.m. Friday at UMC, Peeler said.

Funeral services for Wentworth are Sunday at 2 p.m. at FirstBaptist Church of Bude, with burial in Midway Cemetery inMeadville.
