Loyd Star girls clip St. Al in 2 overtimes

VICKSBURG — In a wild, Tuesday night basketball game, featuring100 free throws and double overtime, the Loyd Star Lady Hornetspulled out a 79-68 victory over the St. Aloysius girls. They weredirected by senior guard Jordan Britt who poured in a career-high39 points, including 12 of 14 from the free throw line in thesecond, 4-minute overtime.

In the varsity boys game, senior guard Tyler Williford pumped ina game-high 23 points to direct the Hornets to an 83-53 win overthe Flashes. Williford also grabbed 7 rebounds, made 2 steals andblocked 2 shots.

The Lady Hornets (5-3) resume play Friday nightat Enterprise.

“Our key to winning was that we made some free throws and we hadsome younger players step up and help our scoring,” said Loyd Stargirls coach Lori Britt. “They responded.”

Standout senior guard Shara Johnson sustained torn ligaments inher ankle in Loyd Star’s loss at West Lincoln two weeks ago. CoachBritt said Johnson is expected to miss several weeks.

On the backboards, Porsha Jones grabbed 16 rebounds for LoydStar. Ratcliff had 25 points, 9 rebounds, 7 steals and 2assists.

In the second overtime, the Lady Hornets began stalling theball. Britt made 12 of 14 free throws in the 4-minute OT.Ratcliff’s field goal gave them the initial lead off a feed fromBritt who had 9 assists and 4 rebounds. Katie Nettles made 4assists and 2 steals.

Thirty points by Sarah Kerut led the Lady Flashes in scoring.Kerut was among 4 St. Al starters who fouled out.

The Hornets (7-1) led the Flashes 23-11 in thefirst quarter and 50-29 at the half.

“We played well as a team,” said Loyd Star boys coach Gene(Moochie) Britt. “We played 10 players in the first half. We playeda lot of players.”

Adding support to the Loyd Star win with 14 points and 2 stealswas Drew Case. Ron Jones was tops off the backboards with 8rebounds. Dewayne Branning grabbed 5 rebounds.

Marsh Wills paced St. Al with 17 points. Chase Smith netted 13points. Scoring 11 points was Chris Johnson.
