Gun mishap injures man

A Lincoln County man was recovering today after an accidentalshooting Monday afternoon at his home on Pleasant Grove Road, afamily member said.
John “Jake” Wilson, 20, suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomenfrom a .22-caliber rifle around 2:30 p.m. Monday, said his father,Roger Wilson.
The elder Wilson, a detective with the Brookhaven PoliceDepartment, said the rifle discharged after his son apparentlytripped on a tree stump or root in the yard. He said the bulletwent in one side of his son’s body and exited the other.
“It was a freak accident,” Wilson said.
Roger Wilson said the injury was never life-threatening. JakeWilson underwent successful surgery Monday night to remove a bulletfragment and was doing well this morning, his father said.
East Lincoln Volunteer Fire Department first responders, KDMCambulance personnel and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Departmentresponded to the accident. Brookhaven police blocked severalintersections in town as the ambulance brought Wilson to thehospital.
“They all did a great job,” Roger Wilson said of the emergencyresponse.
