Store employee charged with embezzlement

An employee of a Brookhaven business was arrested at workWednesday and charged with felony embezzlement after an internalstore investigation, a police official said.

Pamela Channell, 39, of 206 Hunter St., McComb, was charged inthe incident and released from the Lincoln County Jail on bond thesame day, said Brookhaven Police Department Assistant Chief NolanJones.

Channell does not deny the crime, Jones said, and claims it wasthe first time she had attempted it.

“She was offered some money by a customer and jumped thescanner,” Jones said. “She bagged the merchandise and gave it tothe customer expecting to receive some money herself inreturn.”

The crime was witnessed by other Family Dollar Store employeeswhen it occurred Sunday. A manager was monitoring Channell when thecustomer returned on Monday when the crime was repeated, Jonessaid.

Other charges may be filed in the incident as the investigationcontinues, he said.
