Lady Cobras tackle N. Pike

WESSON — The Wesson Lady Cobras will challenge the defendingchampion North Pike Lady Jaguars for the Wesson InvitationalTournament title in tonight’s championship game. The game begins at6 p.m.

Wednesday night’s girls action saw Wesson thrash NatchezCathedral’s Green Wave 54-30 and North Pike hammer St. Andrew’sLady Saints 58-28 in the semifinals.

Franklinton, La., whipped Dexter 53-26 in girls loser’s bracketplay.

At 3 today, St. Andrew’s squares off against Natchez Cathedralin the girls consolation game.

Wesson 54, Cathedral 30

The Lady Cobras (6-7) led the Lady Green Wave 11-9 beforeputting together a 23-9 run in the second quarter to carry a 34-18cushion in a halftime.

Both teams struggled in the third quarter, scoring six pointseach as the Lady Cobras maintained a 40-24 edge going into thefinal frame where they outscored their opponents 14-6.

“We rebounded the ball better tonight,” said Wesson girls coachJemmye Ann Helms after the game. “We made passes in the secondhalf. We need to play a really good game (against North Pike).”

All 11 Wesson players scored last night. Leading the way with 11points was Megan Allen. Natasha Brown fired in eight points.

Cathedral got nine points from Kristen Dubard followed by MattieSmith’s eight points.

North Pike 58, St. Andrew’s 28

The 8-4 North Pike girls leaped on St. Andrew’s (6-7) for aquick 17-8 first-quarter lead. At the half, the Lady Jaguarscommanded a 31-12 lead over the Lady Saints.

“We played well again,” said North Pike girls coach John B.Stephens. “Over two days, we haven’t tried to do too much.”

North Pike dominated the backboards, outrebounding St. Andrew’s39-13.

Teresa Leonard directed the Lady Jaguars with 15 points, sevenrebounds and five assists. Britta Stephens netted 14 points,grabbed eight rebounds and four assists.

Pacing St. Andrew’s with six points was Rachel Smith.

Franklinton, La. 53, Dexter 26

C.C. Martin directed Franklinton with 16 points followed byCourtney Thomas with nine.

Nikki Ratcliff scored eight points for Dexter.
