Franklin Co. sweeps BHS

MONTICELLO — On the final day of the Lawrence CountyRound-Robin Tournament, Franklin County took a pair of games fromBrookhaven on New Year’s Day. The Lady Bulldogs got by the LadyPanthers 61-52 while the Bulldogs defeated the Panthers 49-34.

Brookhaven hosts Bassfield Tuesday night for 3 games beginningat 5 p.m.

The Lady Bulldogs (12-2) got 6 points each from AshleyWeathersby and Victoria Hunt in the first quarter as Franklin Co.took a 20-8 lead into the second quarter.

Hunt tossed in 6 in the second as head coach Charles Moore’sballclub held the 34-17 lead at the intermission.

Ole Brook (6-10) caught fire in the second half. Senior guardAshley Leggett sacked 5 treys, 3 in the third period. The LadyPanthers cut their deficit to 11 points, 47-36, entering the finalframe. Leggett finished with a team-high 15 points and 3assists.

Several times in the half Ole Brook head coach Billy Holmes sawhis team cut their deficit down to 7 points.

“I am proud of the way the girls played tonight,” said Holmes.”They could have folded, but they never gave up.”

Moore’s Lady Bulldogs used a balanced attack in the final 8minutes to forge the win. Hunt led all scorers with 24 points and 2steals. Shalenia Wilcher had 9 points and 6 rebounds. Tamara Ganthad 12 points, 2 steals and 6 assists. Shareka Hunt had 8 reboundsand 3 assists.

Lending support for Ole Brook were Swayze Black with 11 pointsand 8 rebounds. Blanche Wilson had 10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 stealsand 7 assists. Portia Dickey had 3 assists.

Franklin Co. 49, Brookhaven 34

The Bulldogs (7-5) got a big boost from their post players,Wesley Brown and Marcus Tillman. Each tossed in 6 points in theopening 8 minutes as Franklin County carried a 17-5 lead into thesecond stanza.

The Panthers (6-10) tried to rally in the second. Bud Chatmanpumped in 9 of his team-high 11, but Ole Brook found itselftrailing 30-20 at the halftime break.

Franklin Co, coached by Chris Jordan, kept the Panthers at bayin the second half. The Bulldogs outdistanced the Panthers 19-13.The Panthers could not find any offensive rhythm throughout thenight.

Tillman led all scorers with 18 points, followed by Brown with13 for Franklin Co. Brown had 9 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists.Jonathan Brooks had 3 assists. Tillman had 8 rebounds and 2steals.

Chatman pulled down 10 rebounds, blocked 2 shots and had 4steals for the Panthers. Kenneth Harris had 5 boards.
