Franklin Co. kickers top Loyd Star

The Franklin County soccer team kept on rolling Monday morning,collecting a pair of district victories against Loyd Star at theBrookhaven Hansel King Sportsplex. The Bulldogs beat the Hornets1-0 in the boys game, and 3-1 in the girls contest on Martin LutherKing’s holiday.

The Bulldogs (7-0, 5-0) used a stout defense,and strong goalie play from Chris Oglesby to overwhelm theHornets.

Bulldog sophomore Ryan Ratcliff scored the lone goal of the gameoff a slicer. With the win, Franklin wrapped up the District7-1A/2A/3A title. Franklin plays North Pike tonight, beginning at 5p.m., at the Complex. They play North Pike again on Thursday.

Loyd Star (6-7) plays at North Pike tonight.

In the girls game, Loyd Star marched out to 1-0lead, before Franklin County sophomore Caroline Yarbrough went on athree-goal rampage. Yarbrough, a Meadville resident, scored allthree goals in the second half from 18-yards plus.

“Today we played a complete game,” said Franklin girls coach BenYarbrough. “We controlled the tempo, and did not let Loyd Star haveany cheap goals or set the pace of the game.

“We dominated the second half with our biggest offensiveexplosion of the year so far. Everyone played hard, and theyrealize they are getting better each game. This was a team wintoday.

Bulldog leaders Lindsay Jones and Andrea Arnold split time atgoalie in the win.

The Lady Bulldogs (3-4, 3-3) must now beatWesson and North Pike to advance into the post-season play.

The Lady Hornets (0-7) got a goal from Dava Berrong. Theyremained winless this season.

Loyd Star, coached by Stuart Sellars, hosts Crystal SpringsFriday, starting at 5 p.m. at the Sports Complex.
