BA sweeps district titles

FRANKLINTON, La. — The Brookhaven Academy girls and boysmaintained their domination of the District 4-AA Tournament bysweeping the titles Saturday night. The Lady Cougars trouncedTrinity Episcopal 52-25 and the Cougars romped 79-44 over ColumbiaAcademy, witnessed by an overflow crowd.
Brookhaven Academy advances to the South State AA Tournament atAdams County Christian School in Natchez this week.
The Lady Cougars (30-1) were led by seniorguard Kelli Byrd’s 14 points. Guard Mallory Logan and centerKristian Davidson both scored 13 points as they overcame Trinity’sslowdown tactics.
“I was very proud of my girls,” said BA girls coach Barry Gray.”They played with a lot of intensity.”
The Lady Cougars won their 8th straight District 4-AA title.They are 30-1 on season and 77-1 over two seasons.
Gray said his girls are expected to play either Tuesday orWednesday against Riverfield (La.) in the South State AATournament
On the backboards, Davidson led the way with 11 rebounds. Byrdmade 4 steals and 3 assists.
Mallory Logan, Kristian Davidson, Kelli Byrd and Lauren Smithrepresented BA on the All-District Team.
The BA Cougars (28-1) led Columbia 36-17 athalftime. They sank 12 treys in the game and were powered by ColeHodges with 24 points. Jeremy Winborne netted 18 points.
On the backboards, Seth Davis had 9 rebounds, plus 14 points.Hodges had 7 rebounds. Alan Gray made 6 steals and Winborne 5.Davis had 5 assists and T-Boy Lynch 4.
“I think the turning point was about midway thorough the secondquarter,” said BA coach Dale Watts. “We jumped out ahead of them.We did the little things well and the big things fell intoplace.”
The boys will play either Central Hinds or Prairie View (La.) inthe opening round of South State.
Cole Hodges, Seth Davis, Alan Gray and Jeremy Winborne werenamed to the All-District squad.
Columbia was down 36-14 at halftime. The losers, defending AAstate champions, were paced by Travis Pace with 18 points. DustinHofer had 12 points.
