Johns, Bowman, Chatman on Miss. team

CLINTON — Brookhaven’s Class 4A state championship footballteam will be well represented in the 18th AnnualMississippi/Alabama All-Star Football Classic. Ole Brookquarterback Jimmy Johns, wide receiver Bud Chatman and defensivetackle Jessie Bowman have been named to the Magnolia State’s dreamteam.

The game will be played Saturday, June 4, in Mobile’sLadd-Peeples Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is 7 p.m. Mississippi trailsAlabama 12-5 in the series.

Serving as Mississippi’s head coach is Ricky Woods of Class 5Astate champion South Panola. Representing South Panola on theMississippi team are defensive back Derek Pegues, defensive linemanJohn Jerry and linebacker Marcus Johnson. Jerry will play tightend.

Johns (6-3, 225) signed a scholarship with the University ofAlabama last week. As a senior, he directed the Panthers to a 14-1record and the state championship. Johns passed for 2,184 yards and24 touchdowns this past season. He also rushed for 1,455 yards and20 TDs.

Johns, recognized as Mr. Football in Mississippi, was named MVPon The DAILY LEADER’s All-Lincoln County Team. Bowman was named theDL’s Defensive Player of the Year.

Chatman (6-4, 220) caught 44 passes for 859 yards and 11touchdowns this season. He has signed with Copiah-Lincoln CommunityCollege.

Bowman (6-1, 305) led the Panthers on defense and signed withMississippi State University. He was credited with 102 tackles thisseason, including 13 quarterback sacks, plus 4 fumblerecoveries.

Brookhaven head coach Tucker Peavey served on the selectioncommittee. He said each school is limited to placing three playerson the team.

Johns, a track standout, will run the hurdles and throw thediscus this spring. Bowman throws the shot put.

Johns will be joined at quarterback by Wesley Beardan (6-1, 190)of Winona, a Marshall University signee. The team will participatein a mini-camp April 24. at Hinds Community College in Raymond.

Woods said Pegues (5-10, 190) would play tailback in the game.The Mississippi State signee rushed for over 1,600 yards this pastseason, leading South Panola to back-to-back state titles.

The other tailback is Tim Holloway (6-3, 220) of Seminary, alsoa State signee. The fullbacks are Jordan Ellis (6-1, 235) of St.Stanislaus and Eric Nicks (6-1, 230) of Lafayette County.

Chatman will be joined at wide receiver by Stuart Davidson (6-1,185) of Northwest Rankin, Larry Frye (6-0, 165) of Gulfport andCo-Eric Riley (6-2, 185) of George County. The tight end is JohnJerry (6-5, 235) of South Panola.

The team’s punter/placekicker is Ryan Hoormann (6-0, 190) ofOlive Branch.

Offensive lineman include Craig Jenkins (6-5, 350) of Pearl,Brian Leggett (6-1, 270) of Meridian, Josh McNeil (6-5, 285) ofCollins, Chris Spencer (6-4, 290) of Meridian, Patrick Swoopes(6-5, 305) of Starkville, Trey Toles (6-2, 275) of Lafayette Countyand Calvin Wilson (6-6, 330) of Hattiesburg.


Bowman will be joined in the defensive line by Louis Ellis (6-3,290) of Lanier, Derrick Outlaw (6-3, 280) of Starkville, JerrellPowe (6-3, 335) of Wayne County, and Willie Pritchett (6-7, 280) ofMoss Point.

Defensive ends are Justin Clark (6-3, 220) of Collins, ArchieSims (6-1, 205) of Wayne County and Kwaydran Mister (6-4, 215) ofO’Bannon.

Linebackers are Jonathan Anderson (6-1, 235) of Ocean Springs,Marcus Johnson (6-0, 210) of South Panola, and Lee Klein (5-10,210) of St. Stanislaus.

Defensive backs include Austin Divinity (5-11, 190) of HindsAHS, Eddie Hicks (6-1, 170) of Clarksdale, Anthony Johnson (5-11,180) of Provine, Cornelius McGee (5-10, 165) of Clarksdale, LatarusSykes (6-0, 185) of Calhoun City, and Andre Watson (5-10, 170) ofOcean Springs.

Working with Woods on the coaching staff are Pat Byrd of Amory,Steven Jones of Ocean Springs, John McCrory of Grenada, MackSampson of Greenville O’Bannon, Ted Taylor of Madison Central,Larry Weems of Pearl. Scout coach is Johnny Hill of Oxford and theadministrative coach is Steve Rudolph of East Central.
