Dear Editor,

The Mississippi State Guard is seeking volunteers forenlistment. We are a part-time military force in the MississippiMilitary Department that is called on by the governor to respond todisasters inside the state. We’re not for service outside the stateand cannot be called up by the president.

We serve without pay unless called up by the governor. We buy ourown uniforms. We attend monthly drills that often are held atdifferent state locations far from home. We attend a monthly summercamp lasting four days, where the food is free but oftenundistinguished. We get called up for dangerous missions for oftenno pay at all.

And we love every minute of it.
