Candidate list grows

The slate of candidates campaigning for municipal office inMonticello increased by one last week.

Tony Norwood brought in his papers to join the race for WardFive against fellow challenger Craig “Bowie” Davis, said DebbieLea, deputy city clerk.

Steve Clyburn, who will not seek the office, was appointed asthe Ward Five alderman by the town board earlier this year whenformer Alderman Pete Mathews resigned because he moved out of theward.

Ward Three remains open this week with no candidates vying forthat post. Incumbent Alderman George Magee has announced he willnot seek re-election.

However, a potential candidate has emerged. One man came in lastweek to pick up the qualifying papers, Lea said.

“He’s the only one so far,” she said.

Only two weeks remain for candidates to qualify before the 5p.m. March 4 deadline. Municipal elections in Monticello and Wessonare non-partisan.

The election is June 7.

Wesson City Clerk Linda Dykes said no new candidates qualifiedlast week.
