Harris to conduct state’s top talent

Zachary Harris, the Brookhaven School District’s director ofbands has been selected to conduct the Mississippi All-StateConcert Band.

The concert band will perform at 1 p.m. Saturday at the JacksonRamada Inn. The band consists of 95 of the best high schoolstudents in the state, who have been selected to participate in theMississippi Lion’s Band.

Brookhaven High School has four students participating in theconcert.

Harris is in his eighth year at Brookhaven High School and inhis 19th year of teaching high school band. His BHS marching bandhas received all-superior ratings for the past seven years.

Harris, a graduate of Callaway High School in Jackson, receivedhis bachelor’s degree in music from Mississippi Valley StateUniversity and his master’s degree from the University ofMississippi.

He is a member and past president of the Mississippi BandMasters, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, National Federation High SchoolMusic Association and Phi Beta Mu, for which he serves on theexecutive board as president-elect.

Harris has served on regional- and state-level music committeesin Mississippi. He was the Southeastern Representative for theNational Federation of the State High School Association’s MusicCommittee.

In 2002-03, Harris was named administrator of the year for theBrookhaven School District, and this year, he has been selectedStar Teacher.

Harris is married to Sheila Bell, and they have two daughters,Brianna and Zacharia.
