LCHS girls nip Brookhaven

MONTICELLO — Lawrence County’s Bridgie Williams drove inteammate Emily Smith for the game-winning run in the seventh inningas the Lady Cougars handed the Brookhaven Lady Panthers a tough 8-7division loss in fastpitch softball action Thursday night.

“It was a good ball game,” said Brookhaven girls coach LisaCovington. “We made too many errors.”

Brookhaven (6-3, 1-2) led 2-1 after the first inning. The LadyPanthers added two more runs in the third for a 4-0 lead. LawrenceCounty scored one run in the fifth and five in the sixth to take a6-4 lead.

The Lady Panthers came back with three runs in the top of theseventh for a brief 7-7 tie with the Lady Cougars.

Powering Brookhaven with a two-run home run, a triple and asingle was Allyson Wallace. Ashley Sykes singled twice. Doublingwas Kelly Vinson followed by Brittany Smith with a single.

Ashley Jones was the winning pitcher with four strikeouts andone walk. Sykes absorbed the loss with one walk.

The Lady Cougars, coached by Beronica Stringfellow, was led byEmily Smith with a triple and a double. Shaina Starks tripled andsingled. Collecting two singles each were Kaila Givens andWilliams. Cori Walker hit safely.

Junior Varsity

Brookhaven knocked off Lawrence County 7-4. The Lady Pantherswere led by Casi Langston, Katie Stewart, Karlee Martin and HannahLowman with two singles apiece. Doubling were Christi Martin andBrianna Ashmore.

Brookhaven visits Loyd Star Saturday for a doubleheader. The JVgame begins at 1 p.m. followed by the varsity at 2.
