Cobras escape Loyd Star

It was nearly a month ago, March 3, on a Friday night when theLoyd Star Hornets invaded Wesson and escaped with close 4-3win.

Friday night, the Cobras got their chance for revenge and tookit as they held off a seventh-inning, two-run rally by the hostHornets for a 5-4 victory.

Wesson improved to 9-4 on the season and 3-2 in Division 6-2Aplay. Loyd Star falls to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in divisionaction.

“Every time we play, it’s going to be close,” said Wesson headbaseball coach Hugh Knight. “It’s real dog fight every time weplay.

“We got a little speed,” Knight continued. “We were going to beaggressive tonight. We felt it would be a close game. We got sometimely hits.”

Wesson led Loyd Star 5-2 with two outs in the bottom of theseventh when the hosts made a run on the Cobras.

Rogers and Fielder walked. Rogers stole third base on a passedball. Farmer drilled a hard single to right field to score Rogers.Patrick Holcomb followed with a single to drive in Fielder. TylerWilliford walked and there were runners on first and third. AustinFagan, who drilled a two-run homer in the first inning, was calledout on strikes for the final out to end the game.

“The difference was our lack of effort,” said Loyd Star headbaseball coach Jonathan Breakfield. “If we had played the way wewere supposed to, we wouldn’t have been it that situation.”

In the top of the third inning, Wesson took advantage of threeLoyd Star errors to score three runs and take a 3-2 lead. MicahDavis and Corey Puckett singled and Daniel Watson got on first on afielding error. Tyler Broome smashed a deep sacrifice fly to scoreDavis. Mason Warren walked. Puckett scored on an infield throwingerror to tie the game at 2-all. Warren scored from third base on awild throw on a pickoff play for a 3-2 lead.

Davis was walked in the top of the fourth. With two out, Watsonsingled up the middle to score Davis and push the Cobras’ lead to4-2.

With one out in the top of the fifth, Wade Williams doubled.Selman went down swinging for the second out, but Hood and BrianChannell singled to score Williams for the fifth run and a 5-2lead.

Davis (6-0) was the winning pitcher with five strikeouts andfour walks. Holcomb (4-2) fanned nine batters and walked four inthe losing cause.

Loyd Star travels to McLaurin Tuesday for two games, beginningwith a JV game at 4:30 p.m. followed by the varsity at 6:30. Wessonentertains St. Andrew’s Tuesday night.
