Lawrence Co. gets two no-hitters

MONTICELLO — The Lawrence County Cougars hammered thestruggling Wingfield Falcons in a Division 6-4A varsity baseballdoubleheader Friday night at Jimmie Davis Park. Lawrence County wonthe opener 18-0, and claimed the second game by an 18-1 score. Bothgames were stopped after three innings.
With the wins, Lawrence County improved to 15-3 on the season,7-0 in Division 6-4A play. The Cougars will enter the final 2 weeksof the regular season with a 2-game lead in the divisionstandings.
“Obviously, Wingfield isn’t one of the stronger teams on ourschedule,” said first-year Lawrence County coach Cory Keyes, “butwe had to go out there and take care of our business, and securethese two wins. Our pitchers came out and threw well, and ourplayers generally did a good job.”
Cougar hurlers Jake Russell and Johnathan Stephens combined on adouble no-hitter. In the first game, Russell struck out 7 of the 10batters he faced. Just 1 Falcon batter reached base, that on aninfield error.
Stephens struck out 8 of the 11 hitters he faced in the secondgame. He walked 1 and pitched around 2 ground ball errors.
Lawrence Co. 18, Wingfield 0
In the first game, Lawrence County scored 10 in the bottom halfof the first inning. Stephens and Russell each had triples in theframe. Joseph Evans, Trent Hartzog, and Marty Ballard all hadsingles.
An entirely new group of Cougar batted in the second, scoring 8more runs. Corey Jones, Dominique West, J.P. Lewis, MackenzieWoods, and Zachary Summers all had hits in the inning.
Lawrence Co. 18, Wingfield 1
In the second game, Lawrence County exploded for 14 runs in thefirst. The inning was highlighted by a 3-run J.P. Lewis homer.Stephens had another triple, and Russell added a double. Evans,Stephens, and Taebyus Smith each had singles in the frame.
In a 4-run second inning, Mackenzie Woods had an RBI double.Dominique West and Justin Hewitt added singles.
