Natchez wins Brook/Cellular South meet

The Natchez High girls and boys captured the championshiptrophies of the 2005 Brookhaven/Cellular South Invitational Trackand Field meet Friday evening, at King Field. The Lady Bulldogsclaimed first-place honors over runner-up Brookhaven 196-108, whilethe Bulldogs got by runner-up Brookhaven 119-109.

Other teams participating in the meet were South Pike, FranklinCounty, Port Gibson ( boys) and Brookhaven’s “B” teams.

Brookhaven will host the Division 6-4A preliminaries Tuesday andthe finals on Thursday, at King Field.

“It was a good meet,” said Ole Brook head coach and meetdirector Patrick Hardy. “Our teams are still young, but they aregetting better with each meet.”

The Natchez girls won 15 of a possible 16 events. They were ledby Candace Frye’s first-place finishes in the 100-meter run(12.87), 100-meter hurdles (15.47) and the 300-meter hurdles(47.50).

The lone exception came from Brookhaven sophomore KatieMackabee. She won the discus with a first-place toss of 75 feet, 1inch.

The Natchez boys were paced by Travis Washington, who broughthome the winning ribbons in the 100-meter run (11.26) and the400-meter run (51.33).

The Panthers were led by senior Jimmy Johns, who won first-placehonors in the 110-meter hurdles (15.55), shot put (50 feet, 10inches) and the discus (159 feet, 4 inches). Johns is the defendingClass 4A state champion in the 110-meter hurdles and discusthrow.

Other Ole Brook boys winners were Bud Chatman in the long jump(20 feet) and Taurean Jones in the high jump (6 feet, 4inches).
