Panthers hammer Magee, Cathedral

Errors played an important role Saturday afternoon, asBrookhaven welcomed Magee and Cathedral to Moyer Field for abaseball tripleheader. The Panthers would claim a pair of victoriesover Southwest Mississippi Super 7 teams, escaping the No. 1-rankedGreen Wave 9-8 and the No. 6 Trojans 11-1 in a 5-inning affair.
It was a sloppy day on defense as the three teams combined for27 errors.
Cathedral routed Magee 18-5 in the middle game.
Brookhaven improved to 16-11 overall, and closes out the regularseason Monday, at Wesson for a single varsity game at 6 p.m.Cathedral improved to 20-4, while Magee fell to 16-8.
Brookhaven 9, Cathedral 8
“Errors were the difference in the game,” said Green Wave headcoach Craig Beesley. “Brookhaven took advantage of the ones that wemade.”
In a meeting of defending state champions, Cathedral (19-4)opened the scoring in the top of the first for a 3-0 lead. AndrewEllard reached on an error. Two batters later, Jeremy Davis’ doublescored Ellard. Charlie Lane singled to score Davis. After singlesby Drew Burns and Zack Calhoun, Chris Rasco’s base hit scoredLane.
The Panthers (15-11) answered in the bottom of the first,trailing 3-2. Zach Watson reached on an error. Elliot Warren washit by a pitch from Green Wave starter Patrick McDonough. Watsonand Warren would later score on Cathedral’s second miscue of theinning.
It was a seesaw battle throughout the 7 innings played, with 4ties and 5 lead changes. The teams combined for 8 errors, with theGreen Wave committing 6.
With Ole Brook trailing 8-7 in the seventh, first baseman GrantMcDonnieal reached on the Green Wave’s sixth error on the day. Twobatters later, freshman Paxton King singled to score McDonnieal andtie the game at 8-8. On a double by senior Guy Orr, King was thrownout at home plate. Orr would later score on a bases-loaded walk toWarren.
King singled twice, while Orr singled and doubled to lead thePanthers. Warren scored twice.
The Green Wave got a pair of singles and a double fromBurns.
Pitcher Cole Newell (3-1) authored the win, allowing 8 runs 12hits, with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. McDonough suffered the lossfor Cathedral, giving up 9 runs, 10 hits, 5 walks and striking out4.
Cathedral 18, Magee 5
The Trojans (16-7) made 8 errors, with 6 coming in the 2innings.
Cathedral (20-4) scored 4 in the first and 9 in the second,sending 13 batters to the plate in the latter. The Green Wave wasled by catcher Jesse Morrison with 3 singles and 2 runs scored.Calhoun and Preston Hicks each singled twice. Ellard and Calhouneach scored 3 runs. Jeremy Davis picked up the win.
Magee, coached by Jonathan Jones, got a pair of singles fromRyan Herington and Eli Toney respectively. Catlin McKenny sufferedthe loss for the Trojans, with a relief appearance by EliToney.
Brookhaven 11, Magee 1
With the Panthers holding a 3-1 advantage entering the bottom ofthe fifth, Ole Brook evoked the 10-run rule with an 8-run barrage;aided by 3 Trojan flaws. Spring’s ballclub sent 11 batters to theplate in the inning. Orr, Warren, Perkins, Crockett, McDonnieal,Dunn, King and Hinton scored. Orr singled twice in the inning; thelatter scoring King and Hinton for the game-winner.
“I am proud of you guys for battling today after last night,”said Panther head coach Randy Spring addressing his team followingthe day’s activity. He was referring to Ole Brook’s disappointing11-4 loss to McComb Friday night.
Crockett singled and homered, his second of the year, againstMagee. He had homered in the Trojans’ 11-9 win over BrookhavenMarch 5. Orr had 3 singles and scored twice. Warren and King eachdoubled.
Spring, aided by his wife Amy and son Brett, honored 5 seniorsin their final regular season home game. Statistician SabrinaArmstrong, statistician/manager Keosha Hooker, along with playersGrant McDonnieal, Guy Orr and Darius Perkins each received a roseand an autographed baseball bat that was signed by all of thePanther team members.
“We had a good day today,” added Spring. “We got some momentumheading into the final game Monday, at Wesson.”
