Panthers nip Trojans

MERIDIAN — The Brookhaven Panthers knocked off the NortheastLauderdale Trojans 6-3 Thursday night in the opening round of theopening round of the Class SA Northeast Lauderdale Regional at GlenFrazier Field.

In the other first-round game, West Jones knocked off Terry8-4.

Brookhaven (17-12) battles West Jones today at noon in thewinner’s bracket. Northeast Lauderdale (14-13) and Terry battle at3 p.m. in the loser’s bracket. At 7, the Brookhaven-West Jonesloser meets the NE Lauderdale-Terry winner.

“I’ glad to get the win this time of year you take them anytimeyou can,” said Brookhaven head coach Randy Spring. “Brandt (Hinton)pitched a good game. He located his pitches. We hit the ball well.We put the ball in play and got some runs scored.”

NE Lauderdale led 1-0 in the first inning. Pitcher Corey Chanceled off with a double and moved to third base on passed ball.Chance scored a run on a sacrifice fly to left field by NathanPeyden.

In the third inning, Brookhaven’s Darius Perkins hit a 2 RBIsingle to score Brandt Hinton and Zach Watson. Garion Crockettdrove in Elliott Warren for another run as the Panthers took a 3-1lead over the Trojans.

In the top of the seventh, Chance hit Elliott Warren and put himon first. Perkins hit his third single to advance Warren. Crockettsmashed a 3-run homer on the first pitch a fast-ball to push thePanthers lead to 6-1.

In the bottom of seventh, Chance singled and stole second for NELauderdale. Chris Oubre reached on an error and allowed Chance toscored to cut deficit to 6-2. Peden got on base on errors. Oubrescored the third and final run. Jacob Garrett doubled with runnerson second and third. Barbacastle flied out to Panther shortstopZach Watson for final out.

Hinton (7-3) went the distance for the win with 3 runs (2earned) on 9 hits, struck out 5 batters and allowed no walks.Losing hurler Chance allowed 6 runs on 8 hits,fanned 10 batters,walked 3 and hit 2 batters.

Adding support to the Brookhaven win were Warren and Hinton witha single apiece. Crockett also double and singled for 4 RBI.

NE Lauderdale got a double from Jacob Garrett. Peyden and RushMayett singled.
