Moak credits team with overall triumph

Frank Moak credited his weekend victory in the Mississippi GranPrix to teamwork. The Herring Gas team captain accumulated enoughpoints to win the overall title in Category 1-2-3.

“I owe it all to my teammates,” said Moak. “They helped mewin.”

Sponsored by The Human Performance Company, the Gran Prixweekend featured a criterium race in downtown Brookhaven, roadraces Saturday morning, time trials Saturday evening and anothercriterium Sunday morning. circling the Copiah-Lincoln CommunityCollege campus.

Moak said 170 riders from nine states participated in theweekend activities. States represented were Mississippi, Alabama,Louisiana, Florida, Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri andArkansas. Prize money totaled $8,000.

Moak, 44, watched his team members land 6 of the top 11 places.Tim Regan won the Friday criterium which was sponsored by Bank ofBrookhaven, and he was 13th overall.

Overall, Moak was fourth in the criterium. H was 14th in the77-mile road race which was sponsored by Copiah Bank and CellularSouth. He placed fifth in the time trial which was sponsored byBank of Brookhaven and third in Sunday’s criterium.

“All I was worried about was winning the overall,” said Moak. “Ikept a list of the top riders’ numbers taped to my handlebars so Icould keep an eye on them.

“It was neat to win in front of my friends and home folks.”

Overall runner-up Nick Kierman of Plano (Texas) Racing finishedjust 3 seconds behind Moak. Herring Gas teammates Chris Alexanderof Lafayette, La. and Bryan Bunch of Ridgeland, finished third andfourth respectively. Herring Gas’ Troy Porter of Baton Rouge wasseventh, Kenneth Bellau of New Orleans ninth and Bain Foote ofMonroe, La., 11th.

Recalling Sunday’s criterium, Moak said, “Bain Foote started toattack for me. He sacrificed second place to help me win.”

Donald Davis of Pensacola, Fla., won Category 4 and Jay Bookmanof Baton Rouge was second.

Category 5 laurels went to Sebastian Alvarez of Baton Rouge andJason Redd of Cordova, Tenn., was second.

Will Ribberts of Birmingham, Ala., won masters-35 and RandallLegeal of New Orleans was second.

The women’s Category 1-4 title went to Debbie Milne of Beldon,Miss. Caroline Soong of Memphis was second and Amy Berger of NewOrleans was third.

The Junior championship went to Carter Lusk of Summit. BenGabarde of Madison was second and Braden Martin of Boyce, La. wasthird.

Wreck update: Ben Schuler, an LSU student, wasinjured during Friday’s 6-bike accident in the downtown criteriumand transported by ambulance Kings Daughters Medical Center.Schuler suffered a mild concussion but he didn’t suffer anyfractured bones.
