Lady Wolves ambushed on Coast

PERKINSTON — The host Gulf Coast Community College LadyBulldogs stunned the Co-Lin Lady Wolves 3-2 and 2-0 in the finalSouth Division fastpitch softball games of the regular seasonFriday afternoon. The Lady Wolves finished the regular season witha 27-4 record.

Co-Lin, now the No. 2 seed out of the South Division, travels toDecatur to face North Division champ East Central Friday at 3 p.m.in the opening round of the State Tournament.

“The losses dropped us to the No. 2 seed out of the SouthDivision,” explained Co-Lin head coach Allen Kent. “It was a toughpill to swallow. We could have won both games. We outhit them bothgames but just didn’t get the breaks.”

In the four games between Co-Lin and Gulf Coast, the totalmargin of victory was 5 runs.

Gulf Coast 3, Co-Lin 2

In the first game, the teams were scoreless until the fifthinning. Angie Davis led off for the Lady Wolves with a single.Mandy Vinson bunted her to second. Amber Beeson’s single drove inDavis for the 1-0 lead. With two outs, Megan Bateman ripped a deepdrive down the left field line that was dropped by the leftfielderand Beeson scored for the 2-0 Co-Lin lead.

Losing pitcher Emily Horne had a no-hitter going into the sixth.After a blooper single, a Co-Lin mental error allowed runners atfirst and second base with no outs. Following a sacrifice fly, GulfCoast shortstop Emily LeBlanc smashed a 3-run home run over rightfield to give the Lady Bulldogs a 3-2 lead and the win.

“We had runners on base every inning but couldn’t tack on theextra runs we needed,” said Kent. “Horne pitched a great game, shejust had that one mistake.”

Horne fanned 6 batters, allowed 3 walks on 3 hits and allowed 3unearned runs.

Jessica Melton singled twice for the Lady Wolves. Courtney Angeladded single.

Gulf Coast 2, Co-Lin 0

Second-game action saw Gulf Coast take a 1-0 lead in the thirdon a fielder’s choice followed by a double. The Lady Bulldogs addedanother run in the fifth on a single, passed ball and an error.

Co-Lin left 10 runners on base. The Lady Wolves had runners onthird base twice and failed to score with 1 out each time.

“We just didn’t get the hits when we needed them and Gulf Coastdid,” stated Kent.

Horne took the loss with 3 hits allowed, 1 earned run, 4strikeouts and 4 walks.

Melton singled twice for the Lady Wolves to extend her hittingstreak to 24 games.
