BHS netters eliminated in state 4A

RIDGELAND — Brookhaven scored three points Monday in the Class4A State Tennis Tournament at the Ridgeland Tennis Center, winningthree first-round matches. The Panthers were eliminated in thequarterfinals. There was a 2-hour rain delay in the middle of theday.
In girls singles, Claire Cox of Brookhaven defeated RebeccaBenson of West Jones 6-2, 6-4 in the first round. In thequarterfinals, Chelsea Bond of Stone County overpowered Cox 6-1,6-0.
In boys singles, Brookhaven’s LaKenya Kelly beat Courey Cottonof Yazoo City 6-2, 6-1. In the quarters, Chris Betts of Ridgeland,the No. 1 seed, eliminated Kelly 6-0, 6-0.
In girls doubles, Brittany Whittman and Heather Shives of StoneCounty upset the No. 4 seeds, Brookhaven’s Ann Kirk Jacobs andGeorgia Rae Rainer, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
In boys doubles, No. 2 seed Casey Price and Liem Thai ofD’Iberville beat Brookhaven’s Taylor Jones and Justin Hobbs 6-2,6-4.
In mixed doubles, Lindsey Hall and Scott Warnock of Brookhavenbeat Landon Bryant and Katie Lyle of West Jones 6-0, 6-0 in theopener. In the quarterfinals, No. 2 seeds Paula and Charlie Busbydefeated Hall-Warnock 6-2, 6-2.
Brookhaven loses three seniors to graduation in Cox, Hall andJacobs.
“There were a couple of matches we should have won,” said OleBrook tennis coach David Misner. “All of our players tried theirbest.”
Semifinals and finals are today. New Albany is the defendingstate champion.
