Some Brookhaven voters will be returning to the polls Tuesday,while voters in Wesson, Monticello, Meadville and Bude will bemaking their first trips to cast ballots in this year’s municipalelections.

All polling places in Brookhaven will be open, but only votersin Ward Five have a contested race. In it, Democrat D.W. Maxwell isfacing Republican Don Godbold in the race for alderman.

Incumbents in other Brookhaven offices were either unopposed orwon the right to re-election during last month’s primary.

Other communities, though, will be choosing mayors and aldermenin their nonpartisan elections Tuesday.

Bude has a contested mayor’s race, and several communities’alderman races feature a mixture of ward and at-large contests,with a handful of ward aldermen unopposed for re-election.

Brookhaven and other communities in southwest Mississippi areblessed to have quality individuals willing serve in public office.Elected officials play a pivotal role in helping to shape theeconomic and social futures of their communities and, to somedegree, the area as a whole.

Citizens should take an interest in Tuesday’s elections andexercise their rights in deciding who their leaders will be for thenext four years. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
