Equipment operator dies in accident

A 22-year-old heavy-equipment operator was killed Wednesday whena machine rolled onto him, officials said.

Gervarius Dickey, of Brookhaven, was pronounced dead at thescene of the accident around 1:45 p.m., Lincoln County Coroner ClayMcMorris said. He was the son of Victor and Ruby Lee Macabee andGerald Dickey, all of Brookhaven.

Gervarius Dickey, a three-month employee of Oddee Smith and SonsConstruction Inc., was operating a scraper, a machine used to moveand pick up dirt, at the company’s gravel pit on Macedonia Roadwhen the accident occurred, McMorris said.

According to witnesses, Dickey was moving dirt on a hillapproximately 6 to 8 feet high when he got too close to theedge.

“It slipped off the hill and turned over on him,” McMorrissaid.
