Residents prepare site for MLK Drive events

Plans for this month’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drivededication celebration are moving forward following last week’scleaning of a lot to be used for event entertainment.
Organizer Polly Byrd said volunteers came through “big time” toclear the land at the corner of MLK Drive and Monticello Street.Byrd said owner Chuck Nelms donated use of the land for the July 30festivities.
Activities that day will kick off with a parade, a dedicationceremony and musical entertainment. Events are scheduled from 10a.m. to 9 p.m.
Byrd said four concerts are planned for the corner site. Theyinclude gospel, R&B, rap and blues, hosted by Black Gold’s LeeKing with A Night at the Apollo.
MLK Drive will be closed off from Monticello Street toIndependence Street to host vendors who will be on hand to selltreats and other items.
According to Byrd, providing manpower, equipment and otherassistance in last week’s land clean up were Kenneth Collins,Virgil Williams, Virgil Williams Jr., Chris Dunaway and DavidDunaway, Roger Dale Herrington, B&O Supply, Larry Ford, SamLewis, Leon Hayes, Ronnie Bridges, Charles Kelly, Travell Williams,Mike Byrd, Jessie Crasy, Luther Dixon, Calvin Lewis, Mr. Lee andMayor Bob Massengill.
