Magee tops Brook Americans

NATCHEZ — The Magee All-Stars used 3 pitchers who combined on a3-hitter Sunday night on Carroll Jones Field at Duncan Park. Theresult was a 4-2 winners bracket victory over the BrookhavenAmerican League All-Stars in Day 2 of the Mississippi Dixie YouthBaseball 11-year old state tournament.

With the loss, Brookhaven drops into the loser’s bracket, wherethe Americans will take on Laurel tonight at 6 p.m. on DuncanPark’s Ballew-Boulin Field. Magee gets a day of rest, beforetackling the Natchez/Petal winner Tuesday night for 8 at CarrollJones Field.

Petal beat McComb 11-1 Sunday. Natchez plays Petal tonight at7.

Magee 4, Brookhaven 2

The starting pitchers for both teams, Brandon Johnston of Mageeand Brookhaven’s Corey Funk, had an old-fashion pitching duelduring the first 2 innings. That all changed in the third as bothteams went to the bullpen.

Magee took advantage of the first pitching change, scoring 3runs in the top of the third for a 3-0 lead. With no outs, DakotaKennedy singled. Steven Chisolm went to first as he was hit by apitch. Patrick Dickson walked to load the bases. Leadoff batterRashad Williamson doubled, scoring Kennedy and Chisolm. With 1 out,Cody Sartin walked. Tyson McDonald grounded into a fielder’schoice, scoring Dickson.

Brookhaven, under the field direction of Coaches Mike Durr,Chase Fugler and Glenn Miller, scored a run in the bottom of thethird to cut the deficit to 2 runs, 3-1. J.D. Sones walked, stolesecond and later scored on a wild pitch.

Magee responded with a single run in the fourth, extending itslead to 4-1. Chase Mooney singled. Sellers doubled. With 1 out,Franklin Hayes singled to score Mooney.

Brookhaven provided a run in the fifth for the final score. JeffRushing reached first as he was hit by a pitch. Funk doubled toscore Rushing.

McDonald picked up the win in relief of Johnston for Magee;allowing 1 run, no hits or walks with 3 strikeouts. Chisolm pitchedthe final inning in relief.

Brookhaven used 5 pitchers in the game. Reliever Jeremy Lairdsuffered the loss, giving up 3 runs, 2 hits and 2 walks. LeightonJordan, Brennan Miller and Anthony Durr each made a reliefappearance.
