School vandal avoids arrest

A vandal with a terrorism-related message eluded police inWesson early this morning.
An officer was approaching the high school building at WessonAttendance Center around 1:15 a.m. when he saw a man vandalizing awall of the school, said police officer Bateman Stilley.
“He spray-painted some words on one of the walls by the mural,”he said. “It was pretty large – about 10- to 12-inch letters.”
The would-be artist depicted the twin towers tragedy of Sept.11, 2001, by drawing the towers and an approaching airplane. Thegraffiti contained two vague references to the four-year-oldincident.
The man saw the officer approaching and bolted into the woodsand into a heavy thicket, Stilley said.
“It was so thick in there he just got away from us,” hesaid.
The vandalism is still under investigation.
“It’s still early in the morning yet. We’re still working onit,” Stilley said as Wesson residents began to arrive at work today.
In other news, police and first responders had earlier respondedto a medical emergency at the Shop ‘N’ Wash.
A man was walking along the railroad tracks around 9 p.m. whenhe fell, cutting both legs and injuring his ribs on the rails,Stilley said.
The man had a long gash on his left leg and was transferred toHardy Wilson Memorial Hospital in Hazlehurst, he said.
