Fleeing suspect sought for questioning in burglaries

Brookhaven Police Officer Tecumseh Warren sustained a sprainedankle Wednesday while chasing a man wanted on a probationviolation, authorities said.
Chief Pap Henderson said Warren tripped on a root in a ditchwhile chasing Robin A. Stewart, 34, of 201 E. Mildred St. Wednesdayaround 4:15 p.m. The chief said Stewart ran after Warren spottedhim in the yard of a Center Street residence.
“We had a warrant for his arrest, and we wanted to question himin some other things,” Henderson said of Stewart.
Stewart was facing a Mississippi Department of Correctionswarrant for probation violation. Stewart was captured a block overfrom Center Street by Detective Capt. Bobby Bell, Hendersonsaid.
Warren sustained a sprained ankle during the pursuit, Hendersonsaid. Warren, who was taken to King’s Daughters Medical Center fortreatment, was expected to return to work Friday.
Stewart remained in jail today. Henderson said he would not faceadditional charges for fleeing from the officer.
In addition to the MDOC warrant, Henderson said authorities alsowanted to question Stewart about business burglaries that happenedearly Wednesday morning on Whitworth Avenue and Court Street.
“We had an opportunity to kills two birds with one stone,”Henderson said.
Assistant Police Chief Nolan Jones said police responded to analarm at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday at NAPA Auto Parts at 115 N. WhitworthAve. Jones said there was some property damage but nothing wasreported taken.
While checking the auto parts store burglary, Jones saidofficers discovered that the Whistlestop Bike Shop next door hadalso been burglarized. He said the burglars entered through awindow and exited through the back door.
“The building was ransacked, and a small amount of cash wastaken,” said Jones, adding that it appeared the Whistlestopburglary happened first.
Also Wednesday, a burglary was reported at 7:48 a.m. at ServProon East Court Street.
Jones said a door on the west side of the building was priedopen. He said the building was ransacked but nothing taken.
In another Wednesday incident, a breaking and entering wasreported at 7:56 a.m. at the A.L. Lott Sports Complex on EgyptCircle. Jones reported some minor vandalism to the pressbox/concession area.
Jones said it was undetermined if the Lott incident was relatedto the earlier burglaries. He said an investigation into theincidents is continuing.
