Suspect in prior crime charged in burglary try

A Brookhaven man facing an indictment for burglary was arrestedagain Tuesday night and charged with the attempted burglary of aWhitworth Avenue business, said Police Chief Pap Henderson.

Buford E. Dow, 41, of 403 E. Cherokee St., remained in jail thismorning following an attempted burglary at Brookhaven BarberShop.

Henderson said a citizen heard a beating noise behind thebusiness late Tuesday night. The man went to check out the noiseand called 911 when he saw suspicious activity.

“He saw the subject trying to pry the back door open,” Hendersonsaid.

The suspect fled after seeing the citizen, the chief said. Dowwas arrested a few blocks away near the intersection of RailroadAvenue and Minnesota Street.

“I appreciate the citizen and officers did an outstanding jobresponding to this call,” Henderson said.

For Dow, Tuesday’s arrest was the latest incident in a lengthycriminal history.

Dow was arrested in July 2004 in connection with a burglary atFashion Jewelry by Margaret Ann earlier that month. In November, hewas indicted as an habitual criminal on burglary and grand larcenycharges.

Following the arrest, Dow’s probation from an earlier crime wasrevoked and he was sent to the Central Mississippi CorrectionalFacility. It was unclear this morning when he was released fromthat facility.

Dow was served with the indictment from July 2004 incidentfollowing his arrest last night, authorities said. Henderson wasglad to see the man back in jail.

“We got a major problem off the streets,” Henderson said.
