Fire chief fired; performance, insubordination cited in move

Monticello Fire Chief Wayne Harrison was fired by the town boardTuesday.
Mayor David Nichols said Harrison was released for failing toperform the duties required of him and insubordination, but wouldnot provide any details. Harrison was a 19-year veteran of thedepartment who served many of those years as chief.
Harrison also served as the town’s building inspector and floodplain administrator.
The termination was recommended by Nichols during an executivesession and approved by the board on a 4-1 vote. District OneAlderman Jerry Goode was alone in his dissension.
Robert Patterson, a 13-year veteran of the fire department anddirector of the Lawrence County Civil Defense, was promoted tochief immediately following Harrison’s termination.
Bobby Selman, director of the town’s maintenance department, wasappointed as the building inspector, Nichols said.
The board will appoint a flood plain administrator during ameeting Sept. 20, the mayor said.
